The Best Apps for Summer Learning

School’s out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean learning has to stop. Summer is the perfect season for a little play-based learning. Using technology certainly doesn’t feel like learning, but that makes it more fun.

There are tons of apps out there. To help you sift through them, here are some top recommended apps for math and English.


Students tend to forget key math skills over the summer. That’s because math is sort of a “use it or lose it” subject.

Early Learners (Pre-K through Grade 2)

At this level, kids are learning the foundations of math. These apps will help!

Count, Sort, Match ($2.79)

Students count a number of objects and match it to the correct number, reinforcing accurate counting. They’ll count up to 20, spell number words, and sort by a variety of characteristics.

Lola’s Math Train ($2.99)

Students will discover almost 20 different games that help them build their problem solving skills, and practice adding and subtracting. There are several levels of game play available.

Middle Learners (Grades 3-5)

Students in these grades are continuing to learn mathematical basics. They’re exploring multiplication and division and how fractions and decimals work.

Sushi Monster (Free)

Kids work to build a larger number by either adding or multiplying smaller numbers that are on pieces of sushi. Then they get to feed the monster!

Meerkat Math HD ($1.99)

This app is a favorite for many kids. In order to make their avatar run and jump through the levels, players have to answer math questions correctly. And quickly.

Older Learners (Grades 6+)

Math never gets harder, it just expands! That means your older learners will be applying their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division across a different set of problems.

DragonBox Algebra 12+ ($7.99)

This game helps players practice algebra skills, including the order of operations, fractions, and more. The game progresses as skills are mastered, and the puzzles make algebra seem fun!

Middle School Algebra (Free)

How high can your student bounce the monkey? Each correct answer to a math problem makes the monkey go higher and higher! It’s a fun way to practice solving equations.


Reading, writing, and grammar are combined into English Language Arts studies by Common Core standards. These apps will help your learners improve their skills in one or more of these areas.

Early Learners (Pre-K-Grade 2)

Early learners are learning the foundations to reading and writing. They’re identifying letters, reading words, and putting their ideas into words.

Sight Word Ninja ($1.99)

Sight words are words that students should recognize instantly. They shouldn’t need to sound them out. Let them practice their reading fluency as they slice the words that go by.

Starfall Learn to Read ($2.99)

The highly popular and effective early reading website Starfall has created a number of excellent apps. This one helps early readers learn to sound out short vowel words.

Middle Learners (Grades 3-5)

Students at this age are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn.

Grammaropolis (Free for one section, $12.99 for all)

Grammaropolis teaches students all about the parts of speech and how English grammar works. There are videos, quizzes, and games to explore.

Adobe Spark Video (Free)

Students use their voice to tell stories in this user-friendly video making app. Storytelling and creating stories go hand in hand, so this is a fun way to practice important literacy skills.

Older Learners (Grades 6+)

Students in these grades are continuing to build their vocabulary, improve their reading speed and comprehension and write and share their ideas with a larger audience.

Free Books Ultimate Classics Library (Free)

Turn your phone or tablet into a library of classic novels with this app. Your student can explore novels by title or author. Learners can also read reviews from others.

English Idioms Illustrated (Free with In-App Purchases for new packs)

This app will help explain idioms to your students as they improve their vocabulary and understanding at the same time.
