As the fall season gets underway, it signals the need for some amazing autumnal scents in the home. If you are hoping to avoid spilling chemicals in your home from commercial home products, try some of these natural methods to get your home smelling amazing for the fall.
Essential oils are one really natural, healthy way to scent your home for the fall season. Not only do essential oils make the home smell nice, but they also have disinfecting and healing properties as well. You can choose from some really nice oils to make the home smell pleasurable, such as wild orange, cinnamon, clove, ginger, and wild cedar. You can also combine different oils to create a lovely original scent. Essential oils make your home smell fresh and clean without exposing toxic chemicals to the air for your family to breathe in.
Homemade Carpet Freshener
To freshen your carpets for the fall, you can make a very inexpensive carpet freshener for your floors. If you already have essential oils, you likely already have everything you need on hand. If you have not purchased any oils, simply visit your local health store or order your favorite essential oils online.
You will need some type of container in which to put your carpet freshener. This can be anything you happen to have on hand, such as an empty Parmesan cheese container, a glass jar with a lid that you poke holes in, or any other container that will allow you to sprinkle powder onto the floor. You will next need to place one cup of regular baking soda into the container. Place five to ten drops of essential oil into the baking soda. Stir the mixture thoroughly with a spoon. You can then sprinkle the mixture onto the floors to freshen your home. Allow the baking soda mixture to sit on the floors for at least ten minutes then vacuum it up. Repeat this once a week or as often as you feel the need. You will now have a very nice smelling floor for the fall season.
Another great way to get your home smelling great for fall is simmering your own potpourri mixture on the stove or in the slow cooker. This is a very easy and inexpensive way to permeate fall scents all throughout your home.
Simply fill a medium-sized pot or slow cooker with water. Go to your spice cabinet and get any fall spices that you love. This can include cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg. Sprinkle in as much of each spice as you would like. If you have any oranges or apples in your kitchen, slice one and place it into your simmering pot as well. Turn your stove to a medium simmer until it just begins to boil, and then turn it down to low. If using a slow cooker, simply turn it to low and let it simmer all day. Be sure to watch the pot throughout the day so that the water does not completely boil out. Just replenish the water and allow it to simmer.
Homemade Wax Melt
If you are a fan of wax melts, there is a way to make a version of fall-scented wax for your wax warmer. This is a very easy way to scent your home because you are not going to use actual wax, which also means you do not have to form it into molds. You only need some coconut oil and some pumpkin pie spice from your spice cabinet. Scoop a tablespoon of coconut oil into your wax warmer, then sprinkle a few shakes of pumpkin pie spice on top. This will help your home smell like fresh pumpkin pie for at least two days. When the scent is depleted, simply discard the oil and start over.
