Father’s Day is quickly approaching. Do you know how this special day got its start?
A man from Spokane, WA, inspired the celebration of Father’s Day. William Jackson Smart was a widower. While listening to a Mother’s Day sermon one Sunday, his daughter Sonora Louise wanted to honor her father for being both father and mother to her and her siblings.
She started asking local churches to observe Father’s Day in 1910. She picked a Sunday during the month her father celebrated his birthday, June. Sonora’s efforts were successful, and people in Spokane began remembering their dads.
The celebrations started slowly, but with perseverance Sonora saw her cause championed. Other cities and states joined in. But, despite the growing support for this holiday, it wasn’t declared an official holiday for several decades. In 1972, President Nixon declared Father’s Day to occur on the third Sunday in June.
Father’s Day is about honoring dads everywhere for their love and support. Thanks Dads!
