We love helping our members save money! If you’re in the market for some home furnishings, here are our best tips for scoring great deals.
1. Shop Used Markets
We highly recommend checking out your local used market for furniture. We’ve also found great prices on gently used goods for all rooms of the house on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.
Estate sales are also a good place to check out. Sometimes, we’ve seen the best prices on eBay, but we always verify the shipping costs before bidding or buying.
When going to check on our local finds, we follow these guidelines:
- Tell someone where you’re going.
- Bring someone with you if you aren’t meeting in a public space.
- Keep your cell phone on and accessible.
- Listen to your gut.
- Don’t buy a used mattress!
2. Follow the Sales
Household furnishings go on sale throughout the year. By following the cycles, you can save a lot of money.
Spring is a great season for picking up new furniture for our homes; but not for patios. To catch the best price on outdoor furniture, we wait until late summer. That’s when retailers mark down the prices.
If you need office furniture, it’s best to shop for it in the fall; when back-to-school sales are in full swing. Black Friday is also in the fall, and we’ve also found some low prices then.
January is typically the month to buy mattresses, couches, and recliners. It’s a slow month because it’s following the Christmas season, so retailers offer low prices to draw in customers.
3. Buy Online
You don’t have to go to the store to find savings on furniture. There are plenty of online options now, and we’ve found free shipping on many websites.
Buying online is a great way to track sales and buy when the price is right.
4. Do It Yourself
We enjoy simple DIY projects to improve our living spaces. With a few simple tools and inexpensive supplies, like wooden pallets, you can create some fabulous furniture.
Here’s a post with some of our favorite ideas.
You can also save money buying furniture kits that need assembling, instead of buying premade items.
5. Take Advantage of Ding and Dent Centers
Sometimes furniture gets damaged in shipping. In order to avoid taking a total loss on these items, many retailers sell these damaged items for less.
We’ve found great prices on household furnishings with minor damage. Before buying, always ask:
- For a detailed account of the damage
- If the damage will make the product unsafe
- It the damage makes any part of the furnishing useless
- If there’s a way to fix the damage
6. Buy Off the Floor
Floor models are often cheaper than identical items in the box. We often ask retailers if we can get a discount by buying the floor model.
7. Use Gift Cards
Our best tip to save money on furnishings is to pay with gift cards. If you’re looking for a site to earn gift cards from, sign up for an iRazoo account today. We have a wide selection of gift cards to choose from, so you can use your rewards to buy furniture or anything else you need.
